Often called the ‘Playground of the South’ the Mississippi Gulf Coast has a variety of options which make it a great vacation destination. Not only do they have the casinos, but the proximity of the Gulf of Mexico makes this area a water adventure for those who love fishing, snorkeling or scuba diving.
Only 12 miles from shore are the barrier islands. Island camping is available on all the islands except West Ship Island. Since the islands are only accessible by boat, there is a passenger ferry in Gulfport, MS that operates from March to October. The islands are open to private boaters and offer a great opportunity for camping, beach combing, sight seeing, swimming and all around fun in the sun.
For history buffs, the Jefferson Davis home is located on the Gulf Coast and remains as a tribute to him. The property was used as a veterans home from 1903 to 1957 and now remains as a tribute to Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy. Tours of the home are available. From the Gulfport Dragway to Cruisin’ the Coast which is an annual event, this area contains something for everyone.
For golfers, the courses available here are plentiful. The casinos have live entertainment regularly as well as the chance for winning the big one. There are children’s museums, antique shops and many different restaurants from which to choose. If you are up to it, you may want to experience a little Cajun cooking while you are visiting the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
